Description: 1937 Cord 812 Cabriolet by RC Ertl The 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was not the first production front wheel drive automobile to be built in the United States. That distinction goes to the Cord, a division of what was the Auburn Automobile Company in Auburn, Indiana. As originally conceived, the Cord was first built in 1929 as the model L-29 that was in production into 1932 at which time production ceased until 1936 with the introduction of the Cord 810. The 810 was a radical departure from conventional design with a low rakish look with retractable headlights and a front end that resembled a finned coffin. It was often referred to as the coffin bodied Cord. A supercharger was added in 1937 with the Cord 812. The distinctive feature of the 812 was the exhaust pipes coming out of both sides of the car body. The interesting thing about the Cord was the engine. The design wisdom of the time required the engine be turned end for end with the rear facing forward in order to get the transmission up front where the drive wheels are. This also required a bit of engineering in order to get the water pump, fan, and generator up front. Because of the reverse direction of the engine, everything at the front end of the car rotated in a direction that was the complete opposite of any other automobile ever. Strange but true. Offered in 1:18 scale is the RC Ertl 1937 Cord 812 Cabriolet in blue with a light brown (khaki) interior. Included is the 1:64 scale version of the model.
