Description: I acquired these late medieval shears on eBay from Ancient World Coins and Artefacts, who have been dealing in coins and antiquities for 40 years out of the UK. They described these shears as a Thames River find from Queenshithe, found in the 70s. I didn't know much about these types of artifacts and was interested to own something from a period I had been reading about in a book called London's Golden Mile, about the Strand Palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. I thought it might be amusing to use them as actual shears. When I received them, however, one of the blades was bent so the shears wouldn't close. I took them to a metalsmith in Connecticut who specializes in historic metal. He was able to carefully straighten the blade so that now the shears close better, but as you can see they are still slightly curved. He advised against sharpening them or doing anything else to them as it is impossible to tell what the alloy actually is, and the blades could break or disintegrate. So my original idea put paid to, I would like to offer these for sale to a collector of late medieval English Iron work or household objects. Thank you for reading my long narrative.
