Ex-Library of Hendrik Trajectinus, Count of Solms who was a Dutch lieutenant-general. He was cousin to William of Orange and served in his armies during the various wars against Louis XIV of France. He accompanied William during his invasion of England as part of the Glorious Revolution. He took part in the Battle of Boyne, a decisive victory over the Irish Army of James II. This is the definitive edition used by Enlightenment thinkers like Newton and Montesquieu. This pivotal work promised a new approach in mathematical thinking. Descartes boasted in his introduction that “Any problem in geometry can be easily reduced to such terms that a knowledge of the length of certain straight lines is sufficient for construction.” The original French edition was difficult to understand and follow. French was not a scholarly language of commutation at the time. In 1649, Franz van Schoten, a Dutch mathematician published a Latin translation of Descartes’ work, adding his own clarifying explanations and commentaries. This edition provided even more explanation and commentary spurring the development of analytic geometry. Isaac Newton, for one, used this edition in his studies, as his annotated copy in the library at Cambridge University can attest. RAREE1659TYZA
