1670s RARITY-8 ST. PATRICK FARTHING Martin 5a.1-Gh.4 PCGS VG DET ~ THREE KNOWN!

Description: Third Example Ever Found, Second Finest Known! c1670 St. Patrick's "Farthing" Martin 5a.1-GH.4, Sea Beast & Toad, Rarity 8 PCGS VG Details This piece is problem free for the type. Compared to the corroded surfaces of many "problem-free" St. Patrick's Farthings, this piece could have easily been numerically graded, and we bought it as a problem free-piece. Considering the rarity, it really doesn't even matter. Martin knew of just two examples of this unusual die marriage (both owned by him), a PCGS G Details (pictures included for reference) that is black and almost unidentifiable, and a chocolaty PCGS F15. This piece is just the third example ever found, and the only piece not owned by Martin. And, as a PCGS VG Details, it is second best in condition. The surfaces are a smooth, glossy, chocolate brown color with some micro porosity, much of which is as made, the result of it being struck on a cast planchet. The bubbled texture has been worn down. The brass splasher is very clear, and lumpy, as seen on the F15. What is known for certain about the St. Patrick coinage is that is was struck in Ireland, that Mark Newby transported a quantity of pieces to New Jersey in 1681, and that he was instrumental in having them declared legal tender as halfpence in NJ, the following year. The exact purpose and date of the original coinage in Ireland is unknown, but there are various theories as to why they were struck in the mid-17th century. They come in two sizes, often referred to as farthings and halfpence, though this is questionable; the weight of the farthing is more than half that of the halfpenny, and archaeological evidence suggests it was the smaller version (or farthing) that was circulated in NJ as a halfpenny. Both versions were struck with a brass splasher on the crown, making it appear as a golden halo.
