Description: 1730 Beautiful Map of Asia by Matth. Seutter Maker: Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757) was a prominent German mapmaker in the mid-eighteenth century. Initially apprenticed to a brewer, he trained as an engraver under Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremburg before setting up shop in his native Augsburg. In 1727 he was granted the title Imperial Geographer. His most famous work is Atlas Novus Sive Tabulae Geographicae, published in two volumes ca. 1730, although the majority of his maps are based on earlier work by other cartographers like the Homanns, Delisles, and de Fer. Alternative spellings: Matthias Seutter, Mathaus Seutter, Matthaeus Seutter, Mattheus Seutter Published : Matth. Seutter , Augsburg - 1730Size: 61 x 52,5 cm The shape of Japan is particularly unusual – with the “Unknown Land of Yedso” attached to the island. Compagnies Land is located to the east and includes a note that it was discovered by Don Jean de Gama. Nova Zembla contrary to most contemporary maps of Asia, is shown as a peninsula joined to the mainland of Asia. The Novae Phillippinae Insulae are placed a little too far to the south of the Caroline Islands. Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified. The two large cartouches depict various inhabitants of the continent in their native attire, and plants and animals (elephant, lion, parrot…) indigenous to the region. Shipped unmatted. Very beautiful Seutter’s map of Asia, with two spectacular full color cartouches. A highly detailed and richly engraved map. Seutter’s maps are among the most beautifully engraved and highly coveted maps of the period. This interesting map shows the continent of Asia with the countries and areas of Russia, Arabia, Persia, India, China, Korea, Japan, Siam, Sumatra, Borneo and Java and very small part of Australia. Beautiful hand coloring, sligthly damaged map - Little platemistake on the middle - as you can see on the pictures.. Please view the detailed photo(s) below carefully.
