Enigmatically, it carries a nice, deep, counterstamp or countermark. However, there are no mentions of "Countermarked Coinage" in the Standard Catalog cited below. The coin saw use both before and after the counterstamping. Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão "discovered" Angola in 1484. After the new world was found they started exporting slaves. Angola remained a colony until 1975 when the Portuguese left. A bloody Civil War promptly erupted that lasted until 2002. Weight: 16.65 Grams, 37 Millimeters, Copper. Mintage: Unknown. Obverse: JOSEPHUS • I • D • G • REX • P • ET • D • GUINE • Joseph I, by the grace of God, King of Portugal and the Guinea. • Crowned globe with Portuguese arms. • Counterstamp damage. Reverse: 1762 • AFRICA • PORTUGUEZA •/• MACU • Floral garnishes. • Counterstamp • It looks Portuguese to me but I am not certain. Perhaps the coin was marked to circulate in Portuguese Guinea, which was also a Portuguese colony in Africa. These were only struck in three years, 1762, 1763 and again in 1770. This 1762 date is both the first and far and away the “Key” date of the set. It is valued at 6-8 times the other dates in the catalog. The Coin: A pleasing example, it passed through some hands and earned some wear and dirt. It is fully original and has never been cleaned. Possibly rarer with the countermark.
