One story says that many unbound pages of this edition were used to make cartridge paper during the Battle of Germantown, October 4, 1777. Hence it is called the "gun-wad" Bible. Another legend states that after winning the battle, British soldiers seized many of the unbound leaves to make litter for their horses.
