Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1779 REVOLUTIONARY WAR Congressional "COMITIA AMERICANA" Stony Point AWARD MEDAL Description This is a beautiful, high relief, “Comitia Americana” or “American Congress” Medal that was awarded by the “Continental Congress” in it’s July 26, 1779 session to Brigadier General “Anthony Wayne” for his actions at the victory at “Stony Point” on July 15, 1779. In 1779 the British had taken the fort at Stony Point on the Hudson River and Washington asked Anthony Wayne with a force of 1,350 men to take it back. General Wayne had the men storm it with bayonets fixed on unloaded muskets to maintain surprise. By dawn on the 16th, it was taken. 15 Americans died with 80 wounded. The British had 63 killed, 70 wounded and 543 captured. During the Bicentennial celebrations the United States Mint restruck these medals in Pewter using the original dies. This is one of them. The original, in gold, was voted by the Continental Congress and was produced and struck in France. It was designed and signed by French engraver Nicholas Gatteaux. Weight: 21.25 Grams, 38 Millimeters, Pewter. "A Guide Book to United States Medals and Tokens" by Katherine Jaeger. (General Reference).
