Echigo Kanesada Katana, Jo Jo Saku, ca. 1670’s NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Features A lengthy specimen and handsome example of Osaka Shinto workmanship. This is a work by the well-respected second generation Echigo Kanesada. He acceded to the name at the passing of the first generation Kanesada, but hiswork eclipsed that of his teacher and the nidai became well-known amongst theother Osaka Shinto masters like Sukehiro and Inoue Shinkai. In later years, he took the name Sakakura Gennoshin Terukane for which he isreadily known. Given the signature and length, this sword was likely a customordered sword from earlier in his career. The blade features a long nagasa and straighter sugata. The nakago is suriage and signed Echigo no Kami Kanesada onthe omote and Motte Namban Tetsu Kore wo Saku on the ura, indicating the blade was made with ‘Southern Barbarian’ foreign steel. The jigane is a well-forged ko-mokume hada. The hamon displays classic Settsu workmanship with a turbulent gunomemidare in nie deki, with hataraki including sunagashi and frayed nie. The hamon finishes in a midare-komi boshi.
