Description: 17th CENTURY ENGRAVING BY JOHANN CHRISTOPH STORER (German/Italian,1620-1671). "At the Court of Queen Amalasunta of the Ostrogoths" Based on a design by Giovanni Battista del Sole. From: "Raccounto della sontuose esequie fatte alla Serenissima Isabella Reina di Spagna nella Chiesa Maggiore della Citta di Milano il giorno 22 decembre dell'anno MDCX". NOTE: Condition is below average/poor, even for a work of this great age. Printed on very thin "laid" paper entirely consistent with its 17th century date. Trimmed to the original oval, therefore losing the caption and signature. Worm holes upper centre. Paper thin in parts. PLEASE LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS. Oval. Size is 7.25 x 10 inches. A fascinating and exceptionally rare print. Queen Amalasunta has been a very little-known and shadowy historical figure on the periphery of Roman History, as have her subjects, the Ostrogoths, in the age of Justinian. J. G. Storer was born in Constance, and worked as a painter, draughtsman and engraver in Italy for most of his life, notably in Milan from 1639-40. He returned to Constance in 1655. His works, both paintings and engravings, are included in many museum collections internationally.
