After Billings & Spencer acquired the firm in 1939, it continued to use the Bemis and Call brand name. Stephen C. Bemis was born in Harvard, Massachusetts, and began working at fourteen years old at a store in the city of Chicopee. After working there for several years, he partnered with the store’s owner before the owner sold his interests to Bemis in the early 1820s. Bemis then engaged in several business partnerships throughout the decade and into the next. In 1830, he built a factory with a partner in Willimansett, Massachusetts, to manufacture machine cards and small tools. By 1835, Bemis was alone in business, producing hardware marked “S.C. Bemis” and “S.C. Bemis Co.” After a move to Springfield, Massachusetts, Bemis partnered with Amos Call and created Bemis and Call. Initially, the company rented space in a Springfield factory. Bemis and Call eventually built their own factory. In 1855, the company was incorporated as Bemis and Call Hardware and Tool Company. Bemis later retired from the company to pursue other business and political ventures, leaving Bemis and Call to his sons and Amos Call. Although the manufacturer suffered a disastrous fire in 1872, the factory was rebuilt and had multiple expansions by the early 1900s. In 1921, the company dropped hardware from its inventory line and focused most of its attention on manufacturing wrenches. Although Bemis and Call specialized in manufacturing wrenches, it also made calipers, combination locks, pliers, and punches. In 1928, Bemis and Call acquired the patent rights to the wrench designs of the Coes Wrench Company of Worcester, Massachusetts.
