DATE PRINTED: 1811 (dated on print) . SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 15 x 11.5 cm (6 x 4.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Francis Grose and engraved by Frederick Rudolph Hay (fl.1807-1831). Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. PROVENANCE: Published in The Beauties of England and Wales by John Britton (1771. .1857). After some slight successes as a writer, a Salisbury publisher commissioned Britton to compile an account of Wiltshire and, in conjunction with his friend Edward Wedlake Brayley, Britton went on to produce the series 'The Beauties of England and Wales' in nine volumes. The Beauties of England and Wales (1801-1815) was a series of books describing the topography and local history of England and Wales. Produced by a variety of London publishers, the work appeared in 18 multi-part volumes arranged by county, individually Each volume contained engraved illustrations by artists such as Thomas Hearne, J. M. W. Turner, John Varley, Benjamin West. Readers included Charles Dickens. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Downing Hall was built in 1627 by the Pennant family near Whitford, Flintshire. It was later the home of Thomas Pennant, the naturalist, traveller and writer.
