Description: 1822 George IV Ireland Halfpenny, Countermarked W.COMPTON A lovely countermarked halfpenny, the host being a George IV Ireland halfpenny. Despite the large and bold countermarks much of the host coin remains visible including the last two digits of the date. Centrally pierced. Unlisted in Scott or Brunk. Weight 8.12g. I would grade the host coin About Fine (Sheldon F15) and the countermark About Very Fine (Sheldon EF45) but I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself. For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers.
