SIZE: The printed area including titles of the view is approximately 11 x 17.5 cm (4.25 x 7 inches) with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by John Rogers (circa 1808-circa 1888) from a study by N. Whittock, published by I. T. Hinton, 4 Warwick Square, London. Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860) was Lithographic printer and engraver to the University of Oxford. PROVENANCE: A plate published in "A new and complete history of the county of York" by Thomas Allen, published by I.Hinton, issued in parts 1828-1833. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on India paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Cawood (other names: Carwood) is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England that is notable as the location of the Cawood sword. It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. Cawood was formerly one of the chief places of residence of the Archbishop of York, who had here a magnificent Palace or Castle, in which several of the bishops died.
