Description: "Map of the County of Middlesex, from an Actual Survey, Made in the Years 1819 & 1820, by C&J Greenwood. Published by the Proprietors, Greenwood & Co.,13, Regent Street, Pall Mall., London. Corrected to the Present Period & Published July 4th, 1829. Engraved by J & J Neele, 352 Strand." A magnificent map of the County of Middlesex, one of the largest and most ornate available for collectors. A map that is not just a decorative item too: the Greenwood brothers, from Yorkshire, really did do their own survey work, which was all the more remarkable when the Ordnance Survey (with government finance) was covering very much the same ground at the same time. Inevitably the Greenwood project did not achieve its full ambition to cover all the Counties of England, though they did manage all but 6. There is something rather tragic about their work, which was undoubtedly excellent, but just badly timed: Christopher Greenwood was imprisoned for debt in 1834, and died in obscurity in 1855. Still, what a wonderful legacy they left behind, with this superb series of County Maps. The map was first issued in even larger form in 1819, then later 'corrected' for this smaller (but still large!) 1829 edition. Of course, any map of Middlesex is a map of what is now a large part of Greater London. Here, the City is seen extending only as far as Paddington, St Pancras, and Stepney, and barely at all south of the river. Places like Putney, Barking and Hampstead were hamlets separated from the City by fields. With its florid Title Cartouche, and vignettes of Westminster Abbey and St Paul's (drawn by Creighton), this is a superb decorative item. A genuine antique map, not a reproduction, with lovely original handcolouring. The sheet has a splendid watermark along one edge: "T Edmonds, Wycombe. Not to be Bleached. 1829." I have tried to photograph it - see the last two photos.I have other such maps from the series in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
