Description: Handsome engraved map of the northwestern coast of Africa in original hand color, printed more than 115 years ago. The title of the map is Mauritania, Numidia, et Africa Propria, and the coverage area extends from the coast of Morocco west of Gibraltar to the the Gulf of Gabes and southern Sicily, including the Mediterranean coast of present-day Algeria and Tunisia. The scans below give a closer look: This map was published in an atlas of ancient geography by Carey & Lea, Philadelphia, in 1836. It is a great reference to classical place names in this part of the world, and the mileage scale is in Roman miles. The image area measures 18.5 x 24 cm [7-1/4" x 9-1/2"] and longitude is measured from Ferro (smallest of the Canary Islands). The engraver was Phineas Eldridge Hamm. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with a bold, crisp impression, faint toning on the centerfold and in the lower margin, and no rips or tears. There is one vertical fold, as issued, and it is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would make a handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published. We are pleased to offer it with our unconditional, money-back guarantee. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
