The Nièvre department is a French department located in the southwest of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, in the center of the country, and owes its name to the river that crosses it. The department was created during the French Revolution, on Mars 4, 1790, in application of the law of December 22, 1789, from the antique province of Nivernais. Note that the department was originally written “Nyèvre”. Main cities: Nevers, Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, Varennes-Vauzelles, Decize, La Charité-sur-Loire, Fourchambault, Clamecy, Imphy, Garchizy, Luzy ...The North is the French department comprising the northernmost territories of France. The prefecture and largest city of this department is Lille. The territory comprising the current districts of Lille, Douai and Dunkirk was gradually incorporated into the kingdom of France under the reign of Louis XIV. The region only became definitively French after 1713, with the Peace of Utrecht. This territory then became a province of France (administrative division) under the name of Province of Flanders, even if this province included Cambrésis and the part of Hainaut which became French, in addition to the part of the county of Flanders itself which became French. The department was created on Mars 4, 1790, after the French Revolution, during the division of the country into departments, in application of the law of December 22, 1789. The Province of Flanders then took the less prestigious name of “Northern department”, with Douai as its capital. The department then comprised eight districts: Avesnes, Bergues, Cambrai, Douai, Hazebrouck, Lille, Le Quesnoy and Valenciennes. Its soils are already very intensively exploited by agriculture, livestock breeding and forestry when they are not built on: when the soil was distributed in the 650 communes of the North at the time of the creation of the Napoleonic land register, marshes and wasteland already constituted only 1.31% of the soils of the department. In 1800, the districts became arrondissements and their number was reduced to six: Avesnes, Bergues, Cambrai, Cassel, Douai and Lille. In 1803, the capital of the department was moved from Douai to Lille. Several reorganizations subsequently took place: the sub-prefecture of Bergues was moved to Dunkirk in 1803, the district of Valenciennes was created in 1824, the sub-prefecture of Cassel was moved to Hazebrouck in 1857, and finally the district of Hazebrouck was abolished in 1926 and integrated into that of Dunkirk.Professional in the sale (and passion) of historical and geographical engravings, I will ship your purchase with the greatest care as I myself would like to receive it.
