Description: **DEEPEST SPRINGTIME DISCOUNTS SO THIS CAN BE WITHIN REACH OF A COLLECTOR. LOWEST COST OF THIS MINTAGE ON EBAY!**1849-D Type 1 gold Dollar, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Extremely Fine (details - for being removed from jewelry - if you can see where). We are proud to make available one of a series rarity, coined gold from the antebellum southern branch mint at Dahlonega, one of the keystone, more notable coins offered in the David MA Coins shop. The 1849-D Type 1 gold dollar, of the gold dollar's first-year type "open wreath" on the reverse, had a mintage of under 22,000, and only an estimated 300 or so now survive - and this is one of them. Sometimes, when a coin, realized to be a valuable numismatic item, is removed from jewelry, you see all kinds of solder splotches which makes you wonder why they are for sale. Fortunately, this one is not that - only a small dented mark was left on and around the rim, where the "D" mintmark is, and can be seen in these photos. This specimen can be acquired and will look great in a collection - and it was in a collection just before this. It is easier to visualize the establishment of the branch mints at Dahlonega, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, when one realizes that California gold had not yet arrived in American commerce in the times of the 1840s and early 1850s. Before California, the U.S. main strength of non-imported gold riches were in the mines and waterways of these two regions, in this early period of U.S. history before the vast wealth of the West would be found and supplied. Transportation being difficult before rails and roads were established as they would be later, creating branch mints made good sense. The output at the “C-“ and “D-“ mints were good money suppliers for the regions but not the same as at Mother Philadelphia U.S. Mint – output yearly was in the thousands, usually, at the most. The Civil War led to the closure of these two mints; and afterwards, times had changed and Western mints had taken over assisting Philadelphia in coining gold for the country. These gold coins from Dahlonega and Charlotte are all scarce and not offered in adequate supply - no more than a few of each year/mintmark - on eBay. Enjoy looking it over and considering to purchase!2849
