This 1st Year Issue, of the 1st U.S. Small Cent, shows Superb Feather Detail on the obverse, with minor wear on the Reverse as well. This is a Beautiful Specimen, of a Highly Ambitious Eagle Coin Design, which is one of the reasons this coin did not last. It was Hoarded because of its Beauty; And, it had production problems as well. The Tails and the Heads would not always strike well; And when they did, the coins would still not stack well. This High Grade example has a Nice, Even Copper Nickel Tone. This Ultra Low, 17.5 Million Mintage, Pre- Civil War, U.S. One Cent is a Deed of Historic Real Estate, and an Appreciating Asset. The collectible rare coin pictured is the coin you will receive. To See All of my 1857 Flying Eagle Cents, Click Here. To See the Coins I have At, or Near this Grade, Click Here. The 1858 Flying Eagle came in Two main varieties: the Large and Small Letter versions. It is a lesser known fact, that there were several different varieties of backs within those two main varieties. The Flying Eagle Cent design was problematic, and was altered slightly several times in an attempt to adjust it. They were known for mis-strikes on the tails and heads, and when struck perfectly, they would not stack well. James Longacre switched the design to the Indian Head in 1859- the same year that Abe Lincoln ran for President. That particular design was also changed one year later because of production problems as well, in 1860. The Flying Eagle Cents, and the first 5 ½ years of Indian Head Cents (1859-1864) were made of Expensive Copper-Nickel, and this led to them being hoarded. The Civil War broke out in 1861, and that increased the shortage of pennies, as these metals were needed for the war. Both the Flying Eagle Cent and the Copper-Nickel Mixture quickly became extinct. These Pre-Civil War, Flying Eagle Cents are a Preserved Piece of U.S. History!
