Hollingshead started his journalism career in 1854 under the tutelage of Charles Dickens at Household Words magazine and then under W. M. Thackeray at Cornhill Magazine. He wrote mostly on political topics related to social & financial reform, advocating the principles of Mill and Jeremy Bentham. This scarce volume is a collection of his satirical essays, including one of his best-known essays "The City of Unlimited Paper" (1857), which became famous during the monetary panic of that year.
