Chase, Baltimore, Maryland Title: American Scenery, Architecture &c (Central Park) Date: 1860s-70s Medium: Stereoview with printed mount Size of Image: na Size of Mount: 3 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches Condition: Medium to rich tonal image with applied color, rubbed with light aging, mount shows light soiling/aging front/back, edges/corners lightly rubbed, embossed publisher’s stamp at left Other: Early view of the Central Park Lake by William Moody Chase. It shows some post Civil War gentleman at front right corner and women sitting above the cave on the rocks. William Moody Chase was active from 1865 to 1895 both as a photographer and a publisher of photographic views covering the Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York regions most generously. In the 1890s, he published a less common set of views of Yellowstone that are presumed to be the work of other photographers. Following the Civil War, Chase worked with David Bachrach who appears to have made many of the views that were published under Chase’s holdings. Chase worked out of Baltimore for most of his life removing to Boston for his final few years. George W. Thorne was most likely a publisher of views from New York City.
