Description: Stereoview photograph of the statue The Rescue at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., circa 1860s to 1870s. No photographer or publisher identified. The untitled view shows a sculpture enclosed by a fence with a gate in the foreground and part of the façade of the U.S. Capitol in the background. There’s an American Views copy view entitled Statue of Civilization that appears to be the same image, though several different photographers made very similar views of this sculpture. This piece, called The Rescue, is by the sculptor Horatio Greenough and dates to 1837 to 1850. It was installed by the east façade in 1853 and with its companion view, The Discovery, flanked the inauguration ceremony for Abraham Lincoln in 1861. This sculpture was known popularly as Daniel Boone Protects his Family and shows a pioneer manhandling a Native American man. The two statues were removed many years ago, thankfully. The stereoview is in good or better condition with only light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing at the square corners of the mount. Nice early U.S. Capitol related Washington DC image!
