Description: Presented is a pretty antique, English sterling silver vinaigrette or scent box made in Birmingham in 1861. The inside of the box has a gold wash. The inside of the vinaigrette box is marked with an anchor for the city of Birmingham, a date mark M for 1861, the duty mark of Queen Victoria's head, a lion passant mark indicating sterling silver and the marker's mark ES for Edward Smith. This piece is in excellent condition. The outside top lid has a blank cartouche encased in scrollwork. The top and bottom have a detailed linear design and the sides are accented with a crisp scroll detail. The inside grill of the scent box has a beautiful pierced design. The inside of the box and grill are all gold-washed. The hinge to the outside lid and the inside grill to the scent box are in great working condition.
