1862 Partly-Printed Union Pass – Dr. Noble Young, Georgetown University

Description: 1862 Partly-Printed Union Pass – Dr. Noble Young, Georgetown University Offered for your consideration is a partly-printed pass, issued in October, 1862, to one of the founders of the Medical Department of the University of Georgetown. Headlined “Head Quarters Military District of Washington,” and issued from “Washington, D. C.” on “Oct 9th 1862”, this document states that “Dr Noble Young & D. B. Clarke having provided satisfactory evidence of their loyalty to the Government of the United States, will be permitted to pass within the Lines of the United States Forces to & from Piney Point Va. for the purpose of recruit health”. An additional notation indicates that “This Pass will expire Oct 31, 1862”. It is signed at the conclusion “By order JAMES S. WADSWORTH / Brig. Gen. and Mil. Gov. Dist. of Washington.” by “Henry C. Lockwood / Capt & Aide-de-Camp.”. The foregoing material is enclosed on three sides by a double line, with the right being the only one without any closure. The back, as with most of these documents, was left blank. The pass was printed by “PHILIP & SOLOMONS, Army Stationers, Washington, D. C.”, as indicated by their imprint at the bottom center on the front. Documents of this type would have been issued to allow individuals to pass through the lines, once their loyalty had been duly established. One of the people on this particular piece was a well-known and respected physician in the area, though at one time he was a slave holder (it is interesting that a compensation claim was filed with the District of Columbia only 5 months prior to the date on the pass). An interesting piece, worthy of further research. Henry Clay Lockwood was born on June 21, 1839, and educated for the bar prior to the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862, was appointed a captain, and assigned to the staff of Brigadier General William M. Morris. He participated in the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, and later served on the staffs of General John H. Martingale and General Ames. He was brevetted major for gallantry in the storming of Fort Fisher in North Carolina in 1865, being discharged with that rank the following year. After his discharge, he returned to New York to practice law. He also served as an officer in the National Guard and was the author of several books. Henry Clay Lockwood died on December 24, 1903 and was buried in Dale Cemetery in Ossining, New York. Noble Young, one of the individuals to whom this pass was issued, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 28, 1808. Cursory internet research has failed to determine the school the Young attended, though in October, 1849, he is listed as a well-known physician involved with three others in the establishment of a medical college in the District of Columbia. They communicated with the president of Georgetown College in reference to working under the school’s charter, and on November 5th, the four men received notice that they had been appointed professors in the new department. In May, 1850, Dr. Young was elected president of the institution, which opened on May 1, 1851. In May, 1862, he is listed as a Professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of Georgetown College, when he submitted a petition for compensation from the Federal government for the emancipation of seven slaves whom he had owned (the internet citation does not indicate whether he was successful in the petition). He served as the physician at the U. S. Penitentiary in Washington, D. C. for many years. Dr. Noble Young died on April 11, 1883 in Sackets Harbor, New York and was buried in Congressional Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia. The presently offered document exhibits signs of expected period use, though it still retains much of its overall eye-appeal. Toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a beige to light tan hue. This toning is slightly more pronounced at the edges and along the folds, with a somewhat darker area on the back (this would have been the outside when the pass was folded during its period of use). Numerous folds are present, fully expected on a document of this type (these pieces were generally folded and placed in pockets or wallets until someone requested to see them, at which time it would be removed, unfolded, and presented for inspection). These folds have affected the integrity of the paper, with several small holes noticeable when the piece is held to the light. The contrast is average for this type of document, with all of the printed and manuscript material fully legible (the signature is particularly bold). The edges are slightly irregular, with the cut at the upper right affecting the inner frame-line. Measuring approximately 5 x 7 inches, this piece would look great framed with period portraits of both Lockwood and Young (and Clarke if he could be identified).
