He was an abolitionist, engineer, and big game hunter, and he was the Governor-general of the Equatorial Nile Basin in the nineteenth century. Though he was renowned for being an explorer, he never received quite the same amount of acclamation that his contemporaries did. Queen Victoria refused to meet Baker, due to the way in which he met his wife; he had bought his wife, Florence, as a slave after they had fallen in love.During the Victorian era Baker was one of the greatest explorers of Africa.Collated, Volume I lacks one folding map, which is provided in facsimile. CONDITION In the original publisher's cloth binding, Volume I has been rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Externally, generally smart. Some light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards and spines. A little wear to the extremities, particularly to Volume I.
