U. Walter and engraved by C. E. Loven with later hand-coloring. Published in New York by A. J. Johnson with copyright dated 1866 in the lower margin. Size: 11 x 15 inches (Image and text) This historic view depicts the US Capitol as it appeared at the end of the Civil War, showing the enlarged building with the new iron dome (just completed in 1865). Drawn by architect Thomas Ustic Walter: Walter (1804-87) was a prominent architect (designs include Moyamensing Prison in Philadelphia and Girard College). From 1851-65 he was in Washington in charge of the extension of the U.S. Capitol, adding the wings, the dome, and projecting a center extension. (Dictionary of American Biography). An attractive image, more than 150 years old, in excellent condition. This is an original over 150 years old, not a reproduction. It is a beautiful example of this original engraving with fine hand coloring, as shown in the photos. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
