Description: This 7 ½” x 10 ¾” print is the cover of Appleton’s Journal from August 14, 1869 and pictures a young mother about to breast feed her baby over the caption of “Will She Vote?” Included with this lot is page 614, which contains the poem alluded to on the cover (“Will She Vote”). Please note that the journal is incomplete, containing only 4 pages, but those pages do incorporate the anti-suffrage message of the publication. Suffragists are referred to as “fanatics” whose “shrieking from amazon throats” proclaims “The Equal Rights of Woman.” The poet reassures the readers, however, that “woman will still continue as Old Father Adam found her,” that, despite the cries of the fanatics, women will still continue to engage in “a mother’s holy care.” An interesting and early anti-suffrage piece printed about 40 years prior to the term “suffragette” and the slogan “Votes for Women.” Some crinkling at the top of the page, but over-all in very good condition.
