The frontispiece is a steel engraved portrait of Benjamin Peirce. Benjamin Peirce (1809-1880) was an American mathematician who taught at Harvard University for approximately 50 years. He made contributions to celestial mechanics, statistics, number theory, algebra, and the philosophy of mathematics. The lunar crater Peirce is named for him, as well as the asteroid 29463 Benjaminpeirce. -------- Good Condition. General binding wear. Wear at the corners of the binding. ( see the photos ) The hinges are tight. No writing. No markings. Semi-circular stain at the left margin of the engraved frontispeice, but almost none elsewhere. The last few pages are worn at the outer edge ( pages in the catalog and the index, at the rear ).
