1870s $5 Manhattan Silver Mining Co. - Austin, Nevada - PCGS 65 PPQ - Choice Unc

Description: 1870s $5 Manhattan Silver Mining Co. - Austin, Nevada Remainder Note - PCGS 65 PPQ - Choice Uncirculated, GEM! Bright & Crisp Paper Quality! Five Dollars in Merchantable Silver. The Manhattan Silver Mining Company of Nevada was established in 1863 and was a branch of the Manhattan Silver Company in Manhattan, New York. The Manhattan Silver Mining Company was located in upper Austin, Nevada and was one of several ore mills operating. The Manhattan Silver Mining Company was the first mine to use the Stedfeldt Furnace which reduced roasting costs by half and prevented the company from declaring bankruptcy. The Paxton & Curtis Bank of Austin financed the mining operations by offering silver mining notes and stocks. Allen & Melville Curtis, who both co-owned the Bank of Austin, were original creators and contributors to the mining operation. Allen Curtis was also the Mine Superintendent and oversaw the entire mining processes. By the 1870's, the Manhattan Silver Mining Company had began purchasing the other mines and mills around Austin and almost held a monopoly in the silver mining operations. The Manhattan Silver Mining Company operated from 1863 until 1887. The mine was then purchased by Anson Phelps Stokes in 1891 and continued to produce silver for a couple years afterwards. In 1894, Mr. Stokes purchased the Clifton Mine & Mill and moved the mining machinery from the Manhattan Mill to the Clifton Mill at bottom of Austin. The Clifton Mill continued to operate until eventually going out of business in 1904.
