The firm became quite successful, and became known for war maps, printed during the American Civil War and distributed by newspapers. In 1864, Prang went to Europe to learn about cutting-edge German lithography and, returning the next year, began to create high quality reproductions of major art works. Prang also began creating series of popular album cards, advertised to be collected into scrapbooks, showing natural scenes and patriotic symbols. At Christmas 1873, Prang began creating greeting cards for the popular market in England and began selling the Christmas card in America in 1874. He is sometimes called the "father of the American Christmas card ." " The Barefoot Boy " is a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 -1892) , one of the most popular American poets in the United States in the second half of the 19th century. Frequently listed as one of the Fireside Poets, Whittier was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. The Barefoot Boy " Blessings on thee, little man , Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan ! With thy turned-up pantaloons , And thy merry whistled tunes ; With thy red lip, redder still Kissed by strawberries on the hill ; With the sunshine on thy face , Through thy torn brim’s jaunty grace ; From my heart I give thee joy , - I was once a barefoot boy ! Prince thou art, - the grown-up man Only is republican. Let the million-dollared ride ! Barefoot, trudging at his side, Thou hast more than he can buy In the reach of ear and eye, - Outward sunshine, inward joy : Blessings on thee, barefoot boy ! " Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
