One of rarest of all the Alice in Wonderland world first editions. The book still has the original binding label located bottom left corner on the back inside board:"Bound by Burn & C Kirby ST E.C.". Completely unrestored, original and crisp with its Orange first state gilt hardback as originally issued. In addition, a wonderful book plate of provenance dating back to the 1800's "High Legh Library - Case B, Shelf 4". Such book plates are extremely rare and collected. The true first Italian edition was bound with morocco-grain orange cloth, and is extremely rare. Carroll followed the sales of his books very carefully, and the Italian version of Alice was not in demand, unlike the French and German translations published in 1869. In this context, the binding of copies already printed was suspended. A part (some 300 copies, it seems), were sold to the Italian publisher Eramnno Loescher, who thus substituted his name on the title page. These copies were bound, with some differences, in a lighter orange grained canvas. Today it is believed that less than a couple of dozen copies are known to exist. The remaining copies of the text were bound in the 1930s (if not later) and rebound in a red binding cloth. The top edge is golden, while the others are not, and there is no protective anti-aging fabric. Their marketing, which took place late, in the middle of the 20th century in large numbers meant that they are often in very good condition. But of the very first edition published in 1872, very few copies remained, hence its great rarity, especially in an excellent condition.
