INSCRIBED: Abby D. That you remember distinctly the dear old days that can never return. My life has its blessings, but in some respects it must be solitary and forlorn. I am glad to know that whenever I come to Boston you are not very far off & I may some time get a glimpse of you. As for your kind invitation to come to you Friday afternoon, you must take the will for the deed. You know I am nearly a hundred years old. I have had a very hard time of it for several weeks past. Not wholly in regard to weather - and I need rest. It will probably be sultry the next few days, Lo I think I must spare myself. It is not impossible that I shall be here when you return in September. If so, I may enjoy the pleasure of seeing you. My home is in the far west. I was in St. (?) Maine but my son Theodore who was settled there with a beautiful home, & apparently the mightest future as a Surgeon, has been suddenly siezed by pulmonary toubles and is battling for his life. He has now some hope of recovery, but can never live east of Denver. During the whole spring & summer I have suffered the keenest anxiety, which has only recently been somewhat relieved. Oh yes, I remember you, as among my dearest of friends, and you remember her, who was the light of my life. -- Affectionately yours, John De Witt THE AMERICAN REVISION COMMITEE Philip Schaff, D.
