In 1850, the business was officially named Macmillan & Co. Macmillan's Magazine was a prominent Victorian-era literary and cultural publication. It was founded in 1859 by Alexander Macmillan and initially edited by David Masson. The magazine played a significant role in shaping British intellectual and literary culture during the 19th century.Macmillan's Magazine aimed to provide a platform for emerging writers and intellectuals, as well as established figures in the literary world. It published a wide range of content, including fiction, poetry, essays, reviews, and articles on various topics such as politics, science, and social issues. Today, it is remembered as an influential publication that reflected the literary and cultural trends of the Victorian period. This does not come with a Dust Jacket, but the cover is stunning. This has a beautiful quarter-bound calf leather and marble paper boards. There is gilt lettering on the spine, some of which is over a red background. The panelled spine has gilt lines tooled into the leather. It is intact, robust, and in a good condition for a book nearly 140 years old, but there is some wear to the cover, more-so at the edges. This includes small marks, light scratches, and a small amount of bubbling to the paper on the front board. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further details. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, but this is consistent with a book of this age. There is foxing on the pastedowns and endpapers. Besides this, the pages are in an overall very neat and clean state, and there is only very light creases at the page edges, and only a very small mark on a couple of pages. On the front free endpaper there is a pen inscription. However, there are no further pen or pencil written inside this book. There are just very small rips at the edge of a few pages, but this does not affect the text. The pages are tightly bound and there are no loose pages. There are no missing pages and so all 480 pages are present and accounted for. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 22 cm by 16 cm and 3.2 cm wide. It weighs approximately 890 grams. This is a fascinating book, which gives so much insight into life at the time. This really is a beautiful and historically valuable find. Thank you so much for looking.
