In 1895 Matthews served as president of the American Folklore Society. He was a member of a number of other societies such as the American Anthropological Association, the National Geographic Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This scarce antique publication is over 133 years old! 1st Edition. From the Journal of American Folklore, Vol. III, April-June, 1890, No. IX. This antique pamphlet is in good condition overall! Original publisher paper wraps are detached from the binding and rather brittle, with some chipping and loss around the extremities. Wraps also show a bit of discoloration and gentle soiling, as well as a Chicago Historical Society stamp on the front cover. Internally this volume is in good shape overall with all pages firmly attached to the stapled binding. There are no signatures, inscriptions, bookplates or library markings to note. The text block of this volume is very clean throughout. Pages show toning typical of age, as well as some minor creasing and edge wear.
