Description: Commercial scale brick hearth bakery employing black bakers in crisp white uniforms. A literal mountain of breads and pastries are stacked on the island and a bag of Washburn - Crosby Flour (more commonly known by the trade name Gold Medal Flour) is staged next to the lead baker. Period pencil reverse identifies this as Da Costa’s Bakery. David Da Costa moved from neighboring island St. Vincent to Barbados where he became a successful exporter of too many commodities to count and influential shipping merchant operating a local fleet of schooners and negotiating the first ever steamship service to the West Indies. Professional quality (6 x 8”) image was likely taken as a press photograph. Strong contrast w/ only single figure’s motion blur to detract.
