Description: Appears to be First Edition published in 1892 by the Jewish Publication Society of America. Definitely the first U. S. edition. Two volume set of the novel about Jewish immigrants in London by Israel Zangwill. "In its first appearance in 1892, Israel Zangwill's Children of the Ghetto created a sensation in both England and America, becoming the first Anglo-Jewish bestseller and establishing Zangwill as the literary voice of Anglo-Jewry. A novel set in late nineteenth-century London, Children of the Ghetto gave an inside look into an immigrant community that was almost as mysterious to the more established middle-class Jews of Britain as to the non-Jewish population, providing a compelling analysis of a generation caught between the ghetto and modern British life." The set is in very good vintage condition with no stains, negligible toning, unmarked text. A prior owner's name is stamped on both front free end papers. Volume One has minor fraying at the bottom spine end. Both have some fading on the spines. Volume One has slightly cracked hinges. Both bindings are tight. There is a difference in the red tone of the boards between the two volumes. Ships with USPS media mail, signature required.
