A comedic novel told with much sentiment. An early printing of the 1890 edition with illustrations by Hugh Thomson and an introduction by Austin Dobson. Thomson was a renowned illustrator known for decorating works by important authors including Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.Written by Oliver Goldsmith, popular Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, and poet in the Georgian era. This is his most well known work, along with the pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village' and his play 'The Good Natur'd Man.' CONDITION In the original publisher's full cloth binding with decorative gilt to spine and front board, gilt to the edges. Externally excellent with minor shelf wear only and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Previous ownership inscription to recto front blank leaf, dated 1933-4. Internally, firmly bound. Minor spotting to fore edge affecting the occasional leaf, particularly first and last few. With illustrations in text.
