The author, Henry Ballantine (1846 India-1914 Seattle) was the son of an American missionary in India. He was the American consul at Bombay, India in the late 1800s. The book describes a trip to Nepal and the Himalayas; at the time Nepal was closed to most foreigners. The trip begins with chapters on Calcutta and Darjeeling at the beginning of their trip, difficulties of travel (including finding the carcass of a dead elephant in their path), the traveling party and "coolies", climbing into the Himalayas, first views of Kathmandu, Pashupati, the culture and people (including comments on polygamy and women slaves), the killing of a maharajah and the effect on their travels, Nepal's architecture, religion and religious ceremonies and much more. Fascinating reading. The book is well illustrated; many full page vintage photographic illustrations, including many of the common people as well as royalty and officials. Frontispiece map. Decorative hardcover with bright gilt and red titles and black illustration of a temple on teh front, gilt titles on the spine. 192 pages. Very good plus condition, firmly bound, no writing inside.
