Description: PIERRE LOTI is the pseudonym of Louis Marie-Julien Viaud (1850-1923) a French naval officer and prolific novelist, known for his novels and short stories set in exotic locations. Originally published in French as PÊCHEUR D'ISLANDE (1886), this English translation, ICELAND FISHERMAN, was published in 1898. The book is considered the finest of Loti's writings. It depicts the romantic, but sad lives of Breton fishermen who sailed each summer to the stormy Icelandic cod grounds. In it, he experiments with Impressionist techniques inspired by French painters such as Monet. Good condition. Decorative bark-cloth covers are worn and bumped on the edges. The text pages are clean and unmarked except for a gift dedication on the end sheet. The spine is cracked at page 112, but the binding is otherwise sound.
