The Directions For Playing are inside the lid of the box. “The game of White Squadron comprises illustrations of 52 United States naval vessels; the object of the game being to separate these vessels into “fleets” of four cards each . . . etc.” Each of the cards has a photo and name of a Navy Ship along with a short description. Actually published after the Spanish-American War, since the ship "Maine" pictured is the replacement (c 1912) for the one that blew up in Havana. Still, a number of these ships were probably in use during the war. Complete with 52 cards . . . The Great White Fleet was the popular nickname for the powerful United States Navy battle fleet that completed a journey around the globe from 16 December 1907, to 22 February 1909, by order of United States President Theodore Roosevelt. Its mission was to make friendly courtesy visits to numerous countries, while displaying America's new naval power to the world. The Spanish–American War (April 21 – December 10, 1898) began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence.
