Description: This is for an original 1898 program scorecard for the game played between the Chicago Orphans and the Philadelphia Phillies at the West Side Grounds in Chicago. The scoring is impossible to figure out, but from what I’ve gathered it looks like the final was Orphans 1 Phillies 0 which would put the exact date as August 6, 1898, the only home game against the Phils which the Orphans would win 1-0. The cover features a picture of Chicago Orphans manager Tommy Burns, who would take over running the club from former manager Cap Anson. All through the program are drawn portraits of the Orphans including Hall of Famers Clark Griffith and rookie Frank Chance. Hard to believe that the Orphans would be able to hold the Phillies scoreless, as they boasted a heart of the line up featuring Hall of Famers Ed Delahanty, Nap Lajoie and Elmer Flick, along with Sam Thompson who would play in 14 games for the Phils. It looks like pitcher/outfielder Walter Thornton would pitch the shut out for the Orphans while Red Donahue would take the loss for the Phillies. The program is in great condition, grading at least fine or better, and is an incredible piece of history from the birth of baseball. Tough to find a program this nice from this time period. The Orphans would go on to become the Cubs in 1903. Clark Griffith would go from pitcher, to player manager, to manager to the owner of the Washington Senators from 1920-1955 including having the park they played in named after him. Frank Chance, in his rookie season as a catcher, would go on to become a Hall of Fame player along with managing the Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox. Ed Delahanty, one of the 3 Phillies outfielders to all hit over 400 in 1894, would die mysteriously in 1903 when he was kicked off of his teams train for being drunk and disorderly, and after trying to walk over the International Railway Bridge either fell or jumped to his death and was found at the bottom of Niagara Fall two weeks later. Nothing but baseball history in this program. Check out the scans and email with any questions. Combined shipping always available for multiple purchases
