Description: A page from an antique scrapbook with color flowers lithograph print pasted on one side, and 2 clipped poems on the other side. The scrapbook page is 8 1/2" x 11 1/4" -------- " Mexican Primrose " Although not dated, this color lithograph plate was probably clipped from a seed / nursery catalog printed in the late 1890s. This is Oenothera speciosa, a species in the evening primrose family known by several common names, including pinkladies , pink evening primrose , showy evening primrose, Mexican primrose , Pink buttercups , etc. Originally native to the grasslands of Kansas , Missouri , Nebraska , northeastern New Mexico , Oklahoma , and Texas , it has been naturalized in over half of the lower 48 United States as well as in Mexico. It is a wildflower plant frequently grown in gardens and is prone to escape cultivation and spread. As the common name implies, most evening primrose species open their flowers in the evening, closing them again early each morning ( some primroses open in the morning and close in the evening ). Some open so rapidly that the movement can almost be observed. -------- The poems were clipped over 120 years ago ; they are from a newspaper printed in the year 1901. ( the newspaper printed a daily series of poems starting on July 28, 1901 ) The creator of the scrapbook saved this poem and pasted it into the scrapbook. 1. " Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight " by Rose Hartwick Thorpe ( 1850 - 1939 ) ( She was born in Indiana and this is the poem for which this poet is most famous ; it was written in 1867 and gained national popularity. She was very successful with her stories for young people. ) 2. " She Was a Phantom of Delight " by William Wordsworth ( 1770 - 1850 ) ( This love poem was written in 1803 and published in 1807. It is said that William Wordsworth wrote this poem for his wife, Mary Hutchinson, comparing her to an enchanting spirit . Wordsworth praises his wife as semi-supernatural or ethereal , and ghostly or quasi-ghostly language ( apparition , haunt ) continue in the opening stanza of the poem. ) --------- Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
