Description: Designed and marketed for children, the Brownie was named after the characters created by Palmer Cox, a famous children's author. They were as well known in the 1880's as Mickey is today. Little did they know at Kodak that the Brownie camera would be so eagerly sought. This camera is the No 2A Kodak Folding Pocket Brownie Camera Model A. This camera is quite rare, as it a revised No. 2. It was made with a strong wooden body, aluminum bed, and covered with an imitation leather covering. These cameras were made from 1910-1915. This particular camera was made in 1910. This 2A camera is slightly larger than the No. 2 for making bigger pictures. This camera takes 12 pictures, 2 1/4 x 4 1/4, on A-116 size film, and originally sold for $7.00 back then, in 1910. That would translate to $186.00 today. This camera has the Meniscus Achromatic lens and the Pocket Automatic Shutter. The camera was easy to use because of its easy erecting shelf and bed, just like the original No 1. This camera and the earlier No. 1 cameras were popular during WWI, as they were light and small and would fit into the jacket pocket. To open the back, simply push the button on the back, and it slides off, using the indentation of the red lens. This camera is in good looking condition with some patina, as shown in my many pictures. The lens pulls out and pushes back very easily. The nickel finish around the lens and the lettering is good with minor tarnishing, as shown. The leather covering looks good, but is worn slightly at a couple of corners. The bed is also worn, as shown. The shutter clicks, and the red lens has been replaced for cosmetic reasons. The bellows have lost their black covering, with thinning to let light in. The nickel winder is good, and the extra take-up spool is present. The film winder has a bit of patina. The viewfinder is good but cloudy. The custom for this camera carrying handle is in good shape. With the push of the button under the handle, the folding lens, bed, and bellows pull out very easily, and you're ready to shoot. Original patents were granted in 1884, 1902, and 1909. The camera is a larger one, measuring 8 1/2" long when folded up. For being over 112 years old, this camera's condition is expected. This old camera would be beautiful in your display.
