Up until it discontinued the service in 2006, WUTC was the best-known U.S. company in the business of exchanging telegrams. WUTC, as an industrialized monopoly, dominated the telegraph industry in the late 19th century. It was the first communications empire and set a pattern for American-style communications businesses as they are known today. WUTC was also a primary means of communication for America's railroads. Many of its one million miles of telegram wires were strung along railroad rights-of-way, as this was an available and obstructed routing. Train orders and messages were transmitted from station-to-station in Morse code by telegraphers located in virtually every railroad depot. Today railroads have their own micro-wave systems of communication and no longer rely on telegrams. WUTC would provide a "franking" card, similar to a railroad pass, to railroad employees whose work required them to telegraph messages. This usually applied to rail workers whose work caused them to travel along the rail lines. The cards gave the employee the right to transmit free messages related to their work.
