Description: Wonderful bound volume of L'Illustration newspaper or magazine, comprised of weekly issues from Jan thru June 1917--in the heart of WWI in Europe! Large issues (book is just under 12"x16" and weighs over 11 pounds), profusely illustrated with images and photos current world and French events. Filled with interesting articles in French and photos and images of military in action, aviation, soldiers on the ground, and more. Too bad I can only include 12 images. This book also has an article and images related to Shackleton's Antarctic expedition (20 Jan 1917). From Wikipedia: L'Illustration was a weekly French newspaper published in Paris from 1843 to 1944.[1] It was founded by Édouard Charton with the first issue published on 4 March 1843, it became the first illustrated newspaper in France then, after 1906, the first international illustrated magazine. In 1891, L'Illustration became the first French newspaper to publish a photograph. Many of these photographs came from syndicated photo-press agencies like Chusseau-Flaviens, but the publication also employed its own photographers such as Léon Gimpel and others. In 1907, L'Illustration was the first to publish a color photograph." Fair condition only--the book is missing the spine cloth but the magazines are still bound in, somewhat loose in spots. There are occasional cutouts, the worst shown in last photo, and some tape repairs, pencil or pen markings. Other wear and tear throughout. Also see my separate listing for the later issues of 1917.
