Description: The Jolly Old Shadow Man. Written and Illustrated by Gertrude Alice Kay, 1920. P.F. Volland Company, 16th Edition. Measures 6.25 x 7.75 in, 44 pages. This is an adorable little P.F. Volland book about The Boy who is so rude and naughty that Grandmother sends him to bed early. He's even rude to the Jolly Old Shadow-Man who takes him on the Road. Once he blows out the candle he's so surprised to find himself on the Road, he forgets to be naughty. Everyone he meets is so rude that after a series of events finally, the Boy wishes he could return to Grandmother's house. When he catches sight of Checkers the cow he laughs. This brings an invitation from kind hearted Plain Jane to share warm cookies while she tells him the story of the Checkered Cow and the Painting Fairies. The boy resolves to be contented and happy and Checkers delivers him back to his room. While there is not much plot, the story is sweet, and the checkered cow is a delight! The book has charming full-color illustrations on every page! It was written and illustrated by the renowned Gertrude Alice Kay (1884-1939), who wrote and illustrated articles for the Ladies’ Home Journal called “Adventures in Geography.” In 1923, Kay illustrated a popular version of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland”. She also painted in the American Southwest, and produced colorful illustrations of Native American and Hispanic children. Ever a keen landscape watercolorist, she exhibited at the Art Institute in Chicago, the Plastic Club in Philadelphia, and the New York Watercolor Club. This book is rare to find in this condition, and very rare to find with the box! Volland books are highly collectable and make excellent gifts for baby showers or birthdays.
