1922 MOTHER GOOSE TOY Bread CARD D54 Die Cut JUNG Baking SIMPLE SIMON

Description: This fantastic card is one in a series of 24 cards issued in the United States. They were issued by the JUNG BAKING company, with one being wrapped with their brand of SUNBURST Bread . The series is entitled “Mother Goose Toys” and is listed as series D54 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue. The front of the card features a 1922 copyright date and I have always assumed that that was the date of issue. The Front of the card features a playful illustration for the nursery Rhyme SIMPLE SIMON. The card also features the illustrators name WM Evans. The cards have been die cut so that you could fold the card into a stand up figure like many of the early advertising Paper Dolls. The back provides information about the series and advertising for Bread. Because it was designed as a die cut toy, I imagine that not many remained intact over the years. The Card measures 5 inches by 3 inches approximately. The card does have some areas of discoloration and some creasing. I have scanned the front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself. This is a scarce series. Bread cards are one of the last properly cataloged frontiers of card collecting. With such fantastic and well known illustrators doing the art work, diversity of series, and the fact that they are scarce with many of the issues being regional issues only, with very low print runs, bread cards are a great collectable that are bound to increase in popularity as time goes on.
