Description: German Forced Loan of 1922 Third Issue 1000 Mark Bond & 1922 1000 Mark Banknote What You See Is What You Get Lot G2110507: Nice examples of a German Weimar Republic bond for 1000 Marks, and a 1000 Mark Reichsbank note, both from the early stages of the Great Hyperinflation. In July 1922 the Social Democratic government of Germany was hemorrhaging so much cash that it was obliged to finance itself via an emergency forced loan from its citizens. Those with an assessed wealth of greater than 100,000 Marks were compelled to buy government bonds equivalent to 10% of the value of their assessment. The loan did not bear any interest for three years. However, coupon clipping soon became a moot point as the hyperinflation rendered the bonds worthless within weeks of their issue. That following December, a 'New York Times' financial headline from the 4th summarized the results, so: “GERMAN FORCED LOAN TURNS OUT A FIASCO” Also included is a 1000 Mark Reichsbank note issued in September 1922. The Mark to US Dollar exchange rate opened 1922 at M186=US$1, breached M1800=US$1 in September, and would close the year at M6900=US$1. Included in the scans (for reference only, not included in lot,) is a graph from the official German Statistical Office of January 1923 charting the inflation over the course of 1922. Printed on thin period paper, it is in VF+ circulated (used) condition as pictured. The last 248 remaining examples of these punch cancelled bonds from the vaults of the former Reichsbank in Berlin ('Reichsbankschatz') were auctioned off by the German Federal Office for Central Services and Unresolved Property Issues (BADV) in 2015 through Spink & Son of London. It was announced that the auction would be the BADV’s final sale of pre-1945 German government bonds. These stunning pieces are original first runs, not replacements, duplicates, or replicas. Authentic historical artifacts documenting turbulent times. What you see is what you get. Makes a nice gift pack for the Old Cold Warrior, student, educator, or history buff in your life!
