Description: NOTE: There are similar copies to this which do NOT have all page edges in Gold Gilt and have inferior quality red cloth & other noticeable variations. This is the BEST COPY of this early Facsimile Edition I have found anywhere worldwide. VERY GOOD Condition in publisher's original, high quality red cloth, all page edges Gold Gilt, Gold Gilt decor/illustrations to covers & spine. Very old, beautiful bookplate inside front board. Has all John Tenniel illustrations from the true First Edition. The book has light top & bottom spine wear as shown, darkening of spine, light cover soiling, a few darkened pages from inserted newspaper clippings as shown- 4 pages with this. I may have missed others, but I don't think so. They appear to be from the same clipped photo of the original Alice photo clipped from a very old newspaper, maybe the first time she was publicly mentioned? The photo was in one spot which has darkened or 'burnt' pages 44-45, but was soon removed to the beginning of the book at the introductory preface (unpaginated) so that it bears the more serious darkening. The interior is otherwise very clean with only some occasional smudges or light soiling. The book has a square, tight and firm binding. This was a well cared for book by first a former South Bend, Indiana book store manager. Nice, collectible, quality copy. The earliest owner of record- to whom the very old bookplate belongs- died in 1980. Here is her obituary: "SOUTH BEND – Miss Mary Virginia Rosenfeld, 71, of 1142 E. South Street, died Friday morning in St. Joseph Hospital. She was born Oct. 9, 1908 in St. Louis MO, and had lived here 50 years, coming from Indianapolis. Surviving are a brother Donald of Charlotte NC; a niece and two nephews. She retired in 1974 as a teacher in the English Department at John Adams High School. She also taught in the English Department at St, Mary’s College and had been manager of the Aquinas Book Store. She held a bachelors degree from St. Mary’s College and a masters degree from Smith College, Northhampton, Mass." I acquired this from the second and last owner, a now long retired English teacher from the very same school who alsotook excellent care of this antiquarian treasure.
