Up there with John McCormack and Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber was probably the greatest lyrical tenor of the 20th century. Richard Tauber's recording of 12 songs from Schuberts Winterreise Mischa Spolianski Piano In 1927, Richard Tauber and pianist Mischa Spoliansky recorded portions ofSchubert's great song cycle, "Winter's Journey." Tauber recorded only 12 of the24 songs, and some of those songs (No. 1, for example) are abridged. Still,Tauber's "Winterreise" maintains a very special place in this incomparablecycle's discography. I'm hard-pressed to think of another singer who performsthese haunting songs with such a combination of vocal beauty, musicianship, anddepth of feeling as does Richard Tauber. His lyric tenor may lack the ultimate in sheer vocal beauty, but it was attractive enough and he used it with such intelligence, technical finish, and musicality that his recordings still delight and enlighten. His half-voice was ravishing, his legato singing and breath control were stunning, his phrasing impeccable. With his light voice, Tauber couldn't do Heldentenor roles, but his 1920 "Winterstnrme" from Die Walknre is full of fervor and sustained legato. Austro-German singers of his time often made heavy weather of Puccini, but despite the German text, Tauber is idiomatic in the two big arias from Tosca, Bj÷rling-like in their cleanness and fervor, even adding a choked tear to "E lucevan le stella". Tauber was no Manrico, lacking high Cs, but his "Ah! si ben mio" from Trovatore is ardent, and Alfredo's "Libiamo" and "De' miei bollenti spiriti" from Traviata are gorgeously done, especially the latter, with its idiomatic phrasing and vocal coloring. Tauber's subtle way with vocal tinting and his equally subtle phrasing make the French selections outstanding; his "Adieu Mignon" and "Elle ne croyait pas" from Thomas' opera are wonderful blends of emotion and technical adroitness, full of superb legato singing, delicate rubato, and ravishing mezzo-voce. Those traits are further in evidence in the German selections, which include a pair of tracks from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, one of them a duet with Lotte Lehmann.
